Revised Journal Entry- Santa Fe Island

Santa Fe Island Journal Entry:

Today was long to say the least, what with getting up around 6:15 in the morning. I don’t know how I am going to do this everyday, but the sites that we saw today were well worth the early morning wake-up. Thankfully it was a dry –landing and I didn’t have to get my feet soaked and sandy which is the worst. The hike around South Plaza was amazing because we were able to see hybrid marine and land iguanas, which are pretty rare. The coloring of black with some color along the backside was interesting because it had elements of both iguanas, which is expected, but amazing to see in person. Along with the iguanas we saw sea lions up close that were too cute for words. I have tried to devise numerous plans to take one home, perhaps dressing one up as a baby? It is still early in the brainstorming process, but I will figure it out at some point. After we left South Plaza we traveled onwards toward Santa Fe Island, the island I did for my report on, after lunch. Upon arrival we snorkeled off the dinghy’s to our first snorkeling experience. I have traveled to the Caribbean and have snorkeled there, but nothing compared to this one at all. This is the first time too!! I have no idea how anything could top this day. The fish are beautiful, one fish looked like rainbow sherbet. There were humongous groups of fish around us constantly, I felt a part of their group. I do not see how it gets better than this at all! I have to keep remembering that I am getting credit for living in paradise for the next couple of weeks. The wet-landing on the beach later was interesting as well. We saw the prickly pear cactus trees all around and lava lizards scurrying all over the place. We saw more land iguanas on Santa Fe, Washington told us all about the dominant males that hang out under the cactus waiting for nourishment. He tricked a few of the lizards by throwing rocks in the air, making it seem like it was part of the cactus falling so they could eat. I have no idea what we would do without Washington as a tour guide. This guy is amazing; he is so passionate about the islands and the living creatures on it. Overall, today was a success in my book and I think I can safely say that this is going to be a trip of a lifetime.
